Your banner is your business card
Your bio is your elevator pitch
Your profile pic appears with every tweet an in every twitter space
Your name/title is also your message
As with any good marketing material your banner should be concise and representative of what best constitutes your "message" or "perspective" to your viewers. Think of an invitation card for a classic gallery opening; the card (or banner) would use a work of art or a collage of your pieces that best represents your art's, character, inspiration and motivation. Consider the layout of your Twitter banner in the section to make sure your layout is effectively communicating your overall message.
Pro tip: Don't just work on the banner in isolation, test it with white and black backgrounds. Make multiple drafts of your banner and really experiment with what image or images combined, cropped or resized work best "within" the framework of the Twitter page itself.
This can often be one of the most challenging parts for Artists who want to "let the work speak for itself". Distilling your message down to a couple lines is not only hard for Artists it's one of the hardest practices in refining your pitch for any business, brand or cause.
Often in our art we are working with concepts or aspirations that are very hard to put our own finger on let alone try to communicate but you don't have to have answers here as much as you should try to ask the right questions.
As an artist what drives you? what intrigues you? what context does your work have in art history? Any of these questions can help focus your audience on the vision you have for your work.
